Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. As a child, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died and made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as cleaner or waitress in order for them to survive. Ruth went to school and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. However, she left school only after two years of school to pursue an acting career. The path was difficult to follow. Although she got an opportunity at a theatre in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that were offered to her. When she was employed as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. There she was able to earn a living as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first acting job. She also been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
